Shirish B Patel is a civil engineer with a deep interest in urban affairs. He was a Founder Director of Housing Development Finance Corporation (HDFC), a two-term Member of the Mumbai Heritage Conservation Committee, and was for 13 years a Member of the Executive Committee of the Bombay Metropolitan Regional Development Authority.

He was one of the three original authors who suggested the New Bombay project (1965). When it was taken up for implementation (1970) he was Director of Planning & Works, in charge of planning, design and implementation of the new city.

He was instrumental in establishing the Indian Institute for Human Settlements (IIHS), of which he is a Founder Director. IIHS was set up, in Bengaluru, a new University devoted to Urban Practice.
