Get to know Matthew Burns

Matthew Burns is the founder of Dharavi, a social enterprise that works to empower people living in slums and informal settlements. Born in India, Matthew was raised in a small village near Mumbai. He grew up with a passion for helping others and a desire to make a difference in the world.

At an early age, Matthew developed an interest in technology and entrepreneurship. After graduating from college, he moved to Mumbai and began working as an IT consultant. During this time, he became increasingly aware of the poverty and inequality that existed within the city’s slums. This inspired him to start Dharavi, which provides education, employment opportunities, healthcare services, and other resources to those living in informal settlements.

Since its founding in 2011, Dharavi has grown into one of India’s most successful social enterprises. It has helped thousands of people gain access to basic necessities such as food and shelter while also providing them with skills training and job placement assistance. In addition to his work at Dharavi, Matthew is also involved with several other organizations dedicated to improving the lives of those living in poverty around the world.

Matthew’s dedication to helping others has earned him numerous awards including the World Economic Forum’s Social Entrepreneur of the Year Award and the Schwab Foundation’s Social Entrepreneur of the Year Award. He has also been featured in publications such as The Guardian, Forbes, and The New York Times.
